With 49 pages of colour plates of exquisite Mughal miniatures commissioned by Akbar the Great, Babur's grandson. Zahiruddin Muhammad Babur (1483–1530) was the founder of the Mughal Empire in India. He was also the author of the earliest known work of autobiography in Islamic literature. In frank and candid prose Babur describes his accession to the throne at the age of 12; fleeing his birthplace of Fergana to avoid murderous relatives; his dramatic capture of Kabul, the city he would love all his life; and his conquest of Hindustan. This is both a classic memoir and a fascinating insight into the foundation of one of the world's great empires. )
