Pearce, Philippa - Tom's Midnight Garden (Published in by The Folio Society in 2008. Bound in cloth, blocked and printed with a design based on an original illustration by the artist Susan Einzig. 216 pages with 27 black and white illustrations. 'It's just a saying, Tom – "to put the clock back". It means, to have the Past again, and no one can have that. Time isn't like that.' Young Tom, however, spending the holidays with his aunt and uncle, is beginning to find that time seems to be just like that. For when the 'mad old clock' in the hallway strikes thirteen and he opens the back door, the scruffy yard is no longer there. In its place is the kind of magical garden he's always longed to explore, where children in strange clothes play games he doesn't know, geese wreak havoc in the flower beds and a gardener tends his plants and vegetables. When one of the mysterious children Hatty reveals that she can see and hear him, Tom's midnight adventure really begins. Since its publication in 1958, Tom's Midnight Garden has sent a tingle down the spines of numerous children, and confirmed Philippa Pearce's reputation as one of the finest writers of her generation. Susan Einzig's engravings perfectly capture the magic of Pearce's world. )
