Young, Edward - Night Thoughts Limited Edition - ( Item 139675 )

Published in London by Folio Society. 2005. First Thus. 2 Fine Hardbacks and Commentary volume. No inscriptions or bookplates. Fine slipcase. William Blake (illustrator). Limited/Numbered. Elephant Folio - over 15" - 23" tall. The massive two-volume Folio Society Limited Edition of The Complaint: or Night Thoughts on Life, Death, & Immortality, the Miltonian-scale long poem by Edward Young, with watercolour illustrations by William Blake. This was a huge, several-years' undertaking for Blake who eventually produced 537 beautiful illustrations, of which only 43 were used in the original printing. Others were added to later editions, and exhibitions of Blake's work over the centuries introduced still others to the world, but this 2005 production from the Folio Society is the first-ever complete facsimile edition of what Blake and Young set out to present--with nearly 500 watercolours appearing (in color and positioned exactly as intended) for the first time. Two volumes 17" by 13" hand bound in Nigerian goat leather with cloth sides printed and blocked with Blake's designs redrawn by David Eccles, presented in a buckram-covered solander box, offered in a Signed, Limited Edition of 1000 of which this is number 457. This is the only colour facsimile ever produced with all of the 537 William Blake water colours. 537 illustrations reproduced in facsimile from the original watercolours in the British Museum. Printed on modigliani neve paper, specially selected to match the original Whatman paper stock, 548 pages in total. Illustrated by William Blake. Accompanied by a specially commissioned commentary volume by renowned Blake scholar Robin Hamlyn in Fine condition xx, 362pp, blue buckram, silver gilt.
