His interpretations now draw from the experience of that time, as well as from ancient texts and potent symbols on the cards which convey their own meanings to those expert enough to read them. It is not enough to isolate individual cards, and give stock interpretations for them. The spread has to be considered as a whole.

The interpretation given by the Ace of Wands commences with a general overview of the spread and what it may be trying to convey, for good or ill.

Next, each card is interpreted in turn in the context of its position in the spread, and its aspect (upright or reversed). Both of these factors affect the meaning considerably, and have to be taken into account by any serious interpretation.

In addition, the meanings of the cards depend on the other cards that are found in the spread. The cards have an internal harmony, and are inter-connected in a way that may not be obvious to an inexperienced reader.
