Morris, William - News From Nowhere - ( Item 138993 )

Published in London by Folio Society. 2015. First Thus. Fine Hardback. No inscriptions or bookplates. Fine slipcase. The first facsimile of one of William Morris’s most exquisite works. Bound in fine leather, blocked in gold with a design by Neil Gower inspired by Morris’s style. 320 pages. Printed on Korolla Laid Ivory paper in two colours throughout. Gilded page edges. 8½" x 5¾". The copy held in his childhood home, now the William Morris Gallery in Walthamstow, was newly photographed for this very special Folio Society facsimile. Its fine leather binding is blocked in gold with a design inspired by the William Morris illustrations. Together with the gilt edges, this edition epitomises Morris’s passion for fine aesthetics, craftsmanship and tradition. His limited edition of 300 copies was a triumph of fine book-making. From the extraordinary opening spread with its beautiful engraved illustration of Kelmscott Manor, to the illustrated capitals that begin every paragraph and the deep margins with a descriptive rubric, this is a true work of art. One evening, after attending a long debate, narrator William Guest travels home on a 'stinking train' and wishes that he could envision the true socialist state that had been at the heart of the discussion … The next morning he awakens to find himself in just such a state – a time traveller to a future England where London and other large cities have retreated into a semi-rural quietude. He is bewildered to find no formal religion or education, no government, no police or army, no currency or competition, no divorce and no factories. Machines exist only to do burdensome tasks, while people love and respect their work – producing food and beautiful things, from clothing to fine pipes. Children go off camping for weeks at a time and run 'shops', while 'neighbours' eat and live together in motehouses, halls or churches. Fundamentally connected to nature, the people have 'cast away riches and attained to wealth'.
